Our Mission
Experts of their own lives
Our Mission Cura Care
Cura Care UK seeks to support individuals in a holistic way which acknowledges they are the experts in their own lives.
Our Mission
The people we support can often present with needs that are defined by medical terminology or labels. Whilst we should acknowledge a person’s disability, illness or disease, this should not define them as a person. However, the focus should not be on the deficit the disability, disease or illness may have on their life, but on the strengths and resourcefulness the person has in a framework that encompasses wellbeing and belonging.
Too often, people with a disability, whether physical or mental, resign themselves to a life that is less than those who are perceived to have ‘ability’. Let’s look at the mere history of the terminology used.
There are various quotes and historical meanings, they all however, have the same thread of dis = “lack of” and ability = “having sufficient power or means”. Notably, using such terminology implies a focus on what a person cannot do. We also need to be respectful of communication and the language we use.
Not just in verbal conversation but in written documentation, which so often focusses on the deficit and its effect on activities of daily living, therefore loses the focus of wider holistic wellbeing.
Strength Based Care and Support
Cura Care UK is determined in their approach to providing strength based care and support. We recognise that this cannot be achieved without full knowledge of the person. Full knowledge includes their life history, family and support network, their unique characteristics and behaviours and getting to know what makes
a person happy!
Above all, doing the right thing from the moment of introduction sets a pathway of trust and acceptance, leading to growth and confidence in their own “ability”. Cura Care UK works with the person through a transition and lead in process which allows for such knowledge and trust to build.
